Mud Season
April and May are Mother Nature's months of retribution for living in paradise the other ten months of the year. Just a few short weeks ago, we finally got the winter we were waiting for, then as soon as it came, it was gone.
The thaw started, and with it came all the sniffs in the melting snowbanks. We humans don't notice it, but others certainly do.
During mud season, the adventures tend to stay closer to home and on more solid ground. In Vermont the trails on state land are closed after the snow melt and don't reopen until Memorial Day. In New York, hikers are asked to stay at low elevations where the soil is deeper to help mitigate erosion. And beyond all that, hounds aren't too fond of being stuck in the mud. The adventures can't stop, however, and hounds need to be hounds!
Besides... even at its ugliest, this place is still pretty.
The sun and softening ground gives some people a false sense of hope that spring is here and winter is over. Snow tires are getting removed, and summer tires are going back on cars. We all know what that means...
We don't know what this little space will become, but G and I figured out a few categories of posts and stuff we might want to document and share. We'll have trip reports of our bigger adventures. We have a few planned for this spring and summer including our first attempts at backpacking with a hound. We'll probably share some of our learning about the gear we bring and use every day to make our adventures safer, more comfortable and more fun. Sometimes we'll put the spotlight on the hound and her friends. Other things will be like this, just out for a walk and not really about anything in particular. We hope you have a relaxing mud season, and we'll see you on the next adventure!
Until then...
